4/13/18
Good afternoon! Don't forget the pancake breakfast is tomorrow. Please check outside our classrooms for the kids' ideas about maple sugaring.
Next Friday we are inviting the children to read a poem at our Poetry Reading Party. The children can pick a favorite poem, practice it at home and then read it to the class on Friday. We would like the students to pick their poem and let us know by Wednesday if they would like to be a reader. This is an optional activity. At the end we will be serving cocoa and tea to celebrate our artists.
Please feel free to send your child in with a special drink from home if you do not want him/her to have cocoa or tea. It is also a fun opportunity for the kids to dress up if they wish. Have a great weekend!

4/6/18 Happy Spring! Everything has been humming along in first grade. We have enclosed a set of photographs from our light and sound unit. We talked about what life would be like without windows, how glass is made, and introduced the concepts of transparent, translucent, and opaque. Enjoy!
2/20/18 A few important notes from First Grade! · Pajama Day Take 2 -This Friday we will be having another pajama day! Please have your child wear his/her pajamas or cozy clothes to school. Small stuffies are also welcomed. · Mud season is upon us! Please make sure that your child wears boots to school (when necessary) and that she/he has shoes or sneakers to change into once in the classroom. · On Thursday we will be visiting the Sugar Shack and tapping our trees. Make sure that your child is properly outfitted for a trip to the Moharimet Woods! · There have been multiple cases of head lice reported at Moharimet. Please check your child’s head on a regular basis to stop the spreading of these little creatures. · The Moharimet community will be honoring Dr. Seuss once we return to school after the February break. On March 9th the children have been asked to “dress up” as one of their favorite literary characters and bring a book to school that highlights this character. Dressing up does not need to be complicated! A simple symbol or piece of clothing representative of the character will be fine. Have a fantastic vacation, Becky and Renée 2-9-18
It was another busy week in first grade! Here are a few highlights: In math we have been working with place value. We have been putting numbers in order, recognizing greater than/less than and talking about how to use a 100 grid. (Hint: rows count up or back by one and columns count up or back by 10). Another snow day! We had a lovely time this morning creating things that make sound. The children chose from a multitude of supplies such as: rice, beans, beads, paper cups, rubber bands, aluminum foil, saran wrap and straws. Ask your child what he/she created and what kind of noise it makes! Penny Day (The 100th Day of School) is February 15 unless there is a snow day. Please have your child bring in 100 pennies in a zip lock bag labeled with his/her name. Have a great weekend! 2-2-18
We are up and running. Please read our latest newsletter at the bottom of the page. Have a great weekend! 1-19-18

Check out our new week in review below! This week we have highlighted some of our favorite activities so that you may have a conversation with your child. In addition, we added a few important dates and reminders. Open House is this coming Thursday, September 28th from 5:30-6:30! Conference sign ups for October 6th will be available at that time! The First Few Days of School Dear Parents, What a wonderful few days we have had! So many interesting things have happened. The days have been filled with many laughs and successful moments. We are off and running! We began the week with greetings and getting settled. Everyone found with ease their cubby, name on the attendance chart, work bin and table seat. We have enjoyed class meetings and have attended to the morning routine of attendance, collecting notes, choosing lunch, and discussing the importance of washing our hands when we first enter the classroom. We have read several “beginning of the year” books including, Thank You and Time to Say “Please”! both by Mo Willems. More activities have included learning the beginning of the manual alphabet in sign language as well as the greeting, “good morning”, recess, and writing numbers and upper and lower case letters. We even took a wonderful walk through the woods and read the book Gotta Go! It is about a monarch’s journey to Mexico. After the adventures of recess and lunch, we relaxed during Exploration Time. The children chose a variety of activities such as legos, blocks or drawing. In addition, we are keeping a close eye on the monarch caterpillars that are residing in our classroom! We are sure that early bedtimes will be in order for the next few weeks (including our own). The upcoming days will bring more learning and discovery! Have a great weekend, The Bradley/Torr Team P.S. October 6th is the day set aside by the district for parent/teacher conferences. The majority of our conferences will be held on that day. Please reserve the date! Sign up will be during our Open House near the end of September. |
